    Sample tracking is the easy part of laboratory software. The value sits either side of it: knowing which released specification the result should be judged against, and what happens downstream when it fails. A LIMS that stores results without holding that context turns your QC team into a data-entry function for the systems either side.

    That's the split in this category. Enterprise LIMS platforms are enormously capable and enormously configurable, which means they need an owner. Lightweight tools get you sample tracking in weeks and stop at the lab door. What's genuinely rare is testing connected to specification, release and the dossier the result becomes evidence for.

    Configurability is a cost, not a feature

    Enterprise LIMS platforms win evaluations because they can do anything, then lose value because doing anything requires someone who knows how. Budget for the administrator, or buy something narrower. A configurable platform without an owner degrades into an expensive sample log within about eighteen months.

    Lightweight tools invert the trade: quick to deploy, easy to use, and silent about specifications, release and the dossier the result becomes evidence for.

    Show me a result that fails. Then show me what happens next: which batch is affected, whether it can be released, who is notified, which customers are exposed, and what the certificate of analysis says now.
