China Updates Safety and Technical Standards for Cosmetics
On 29 May 2026, China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) announced an update to the Safety and Technical Standards for Cosmetics (STSC). The update incorporates a total of eight testing methods into the national standard.
The changes consist of four newly developed and four revised methods. These provide the official analytical procedures for assessing the safety and efficacy of cosmetics in China, forming part of the legally referenced framework that companies must follow when generating compliant test data.
As the STSC standards are a binding technical basis for safety assessments, product registration, and post-market supervision, the changes have immediate operational implications. Manufacturers must ensure that all future test reports submitted to the NMPA or the National Institute for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC) use these updated methods, which may require re-testing or method re-validation.
