China Adopts First Mandatory National Cosmetics Safety Standard

On 6 August 2026, China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) released the country’s first mandatory national standard dedicated to cosmetics safety, GB 7916-2026 Cosmetics,General Safety Requirements.

The new standard modernises the safety framework for cosmetic products placed on the Chinese market. It will replace and abolish the older GB 7916-1987 Hygienic Standard for Cosmetics upon its entry into force on 1 January 2028.

A transition period has been established. Products manufactured or imported before 1 January 2028 that comply with previous regulations can continue to be sold until the end of their shelf life.
