    What AI actually changes in MRP

    Material requirements planning is arithmetic, and computers have been doing that part well for forty years. The work that still eats a planner's week isn't the arithmetic. It's the inputs: chasing a supplier confirmation, checking whether a lot passed QC, noticing a shelf-life clash, working out which order slips if a delivery is late.

    That's where AI earns its place. Not a cleverer planning algorithm, but agents that read the confirmation email, update the expected date, flag the clash and draft the reschedule for someone to approve. Judge "AI MRP" claims on that: does the system reduce the chasing, or does it just visualise the same shortage list more attractively?

    Recipe scaling is not multiplication

    Scaling a recipe to a different batch size involves rounding to what can actually be weighed, minimum quantities, phase structure and yield expectations that differ by vessel. Systems that scale by simple multiplication produce recipes operators quietly correct on the floor, which is the moment your record stops matching reality.

    Ask to scale a real recipe to an unusual batch size and watch what the system does with the awkward numbers.

    Everything else about batch manufacturing software is in service of one output: a record showing what was made, from what, by whom, checked how, and released on what basis. If that record is assembled afterwards from three systems, it's a reconstruction rather than a record.
